'The Echo of a Moment'
WAVING HANDS

From the Garden to Sue’s Easel
The story behind one of Sue’s first paintings — and the bloom that inspired it.

This painting holds a special place in my heart. It’s one of my early works, among the first five I ever painted — and it marks the beginning of my journey into capturing the quiet beauty of nature on canvas.
The piece is my interpretation of a white peony grown in my garden. Unlike the coral peonies that bloom earlier, this one arrives fashionably late, unfolding its layers in a show of pure elegance. I’ve always been fascinated by how peonies transform throughout the day - their appearance shifting with each change in light. To capture that fleeting beauty, I photograph them as they open, from first bloom to full flourish, and at different times of day.
But it’s the early mornings that speak to me most. The light then is softer, the contrasts deeper, and the peony’s folds seem to glow from within - a quiet kind of magic that I wanted to bring to life on the canvas.
It felt only fitting to spotlight this piece as the first in the 'Echo of a Moment' series - a tribute to those fleeting, beautiful instants that inspire my art.
